Templeman Design were appointed by Vinci Construction UK to provide a 2.5 million pound design solution to upgrade the existing Child Development Centre at RAF Lakenheath. This exciting project took the existing monotone building and provided it with a new colourful environment appropriate to its users that range between 6 weeks to 5 years old. The works consisted of internal and external works. The main feature of the building is the new entrance where bright colours and sweeping curves have been used to provide a fun and inviting environment for young children and parents. In the younger rooms purpose made storage and changing areas were provided to enable carers to oversee the class while caring for children. Each room has been colour coded as a means of wayfinding.
Catering facilities have been improved by reconfiguring the internal environment to create a larger purpose built kitchen. Fully automatic heating and cooling systems have also been installed to maintain a set environment within each classroom. Aesthetic improvements were made by relocating parking facilities and enlarging the landscape area to the principle elevation. This included the installation of new trees and raised planting areas.
